FILM FESTIVAL

All screenings take place in the landmark Paramount Theatre, a restored 1930s movie palace on the National Register of Historic Places. The Paramount is located at 352 Cypress Street in Abilene, Texas. Visit the theatre’s website at: http://www.paramount-abilene.org/.

Festival Director Barry Smoot, who also serves as the Paramount Artistic Director, says 24fps “…was born from an idea to encourage aspiring filmmakers. As a nationally recognized historic theatre, we are dedicated to preserving and celebrating the cinematic art form. It seems only fitting that we have a hand in encouraging its future as well.”

Entries are encouraged at every level of experience. Smoot said, “…we charge the Official Jury to look at each film independently, and ask them to consider how it communicates to them individually. Method of production is less important. We ask them to consider how the artist has used whatever tools available to communicate their vision.”

'Beauty & the Beast' has few flaws

Your kids will love McMurry University's production of "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" so much, you'll be hearing about it for months.

You'll like it enough so that you won't mind the conversation.

McMurry's homecoming musical, directed by Philip Craik, is one of the university's biggest spectacles in years. And "B&B" almost lands a bull's-eye on the family market with impressive costumes, a two-story set, and a dazzling new light system that got a full workout at Thursday's opening night performance.

In "B&B," the lovely Belle (Robin Shaw), the daughter of an eccentric inventor, doesn't fit in in her town because she -- gasp! -- reads. Belle still manages to attract the unwanted attention of an egotistic hunter (Zac Tiedemann, reveling in his character's self-proclaimed wonderfulness), but she is most devoted to her father -- so much that when papa runs afoul of a surly, lonely Beast (Kerry Goff), Belle agrees to serve out her father's punishment.

The Beast has his own problems. Kind of a jerk himself, he must live under a spell that makes him appear as a hideous beast instead of a handsome prince forever unless he can prove 1) he can love someone besides himself and 2) get someone to love him back. Belle represents his last real hope.

In almost every case, the casting was spot-on. Shaw is a lovely singer, Goff has a powerful voice, and the reliable Hilary Hokett and Taylor Compton were the best of the supporting characters.
"B&B" wasn't perfect. You could tell some dancers were thinking to themselves "step, step, pivot, step, turn," and a big production number wobbled on the last couple of notes.
But the little girls dressed as princesses who sat near me didn't mind. McMurry's production overall is high quality. Take the family to see it.

Big Country Marching Festival set for Saturday

Big Country Marching Festival set for Saturday

When: Saturday

Where: Wylie High School Stadium, 4502 Antilley Road

How much: $2

What's going on: The sounds of brass, drums and woodwinds will resound almost all day Saturday during the Big Country Marching Festival.
The festival, featuring 18 high school marching bands, is in its 14th year, and it serves as a fundraiser for Wylie High School's Band Boosters. Band conductor Mike Lunney said money is used to pay for charter buses and scholarships.
The event serves as a tuneup for the upcoming University Interscholastic League contests that determine a state champion.
Three judges will provide taped comments to the participating bands Saturday. Directors and musicians will try to learn from those comments as they prepare for UIL.
"It helps bands prepare better for contest and resulted in better ratings overall," Lunney said.
A full concession stand will be available throughout the day Saturday.

Fort Griffin Fandangle
Is a theatrical history, written and directed, lighted, costumed, sung and danced by the people of Albany in its own prairie theater. It has been produced since 1938 and has grown into a community production, staged in an acre-sized amphitheater with a cast and crew of over 400. The Fandangle commemorates the government outpost, Fort Griffin, which stood on "Government Hill", overlooking the Clear Fork of the Brazos River and the town of Fort Griffin, Texas.

All shows begin at approximately 8:45 or sundown each evening.

Eastland's Outdoor Art Exhibit consists of 34 wonderful pieces of art placed near or on businesses throughout Eastland. Each piece of art includes a story of the painter's life or interesting details about the original piece of art. Maps are located at the Chamber of Commerce and at the Huge Campbell's Soup Can next to Dairy Queen, on the Interstate Service Road.

It is summer time and the warm temperatures allow people the opportunity to camp out under the stars.
For the next few weeks, we will post information about some local State Parks. This week, we will take a look at the Abilene State Park:

Directions: To reach the park, travel 16 miles southwest of Abilene, through Buffalo Gap, on FM 89, then on Park Road 32 to the park entrance. Location map for Abilene State Park

Activities: The park offers camping, hiking, nature study, swimming (summer), picnicking, fishing in Buffalo Wallow Pond in the park and nearby Lake Abilene, and biking and walking on park roads.Special

Facilities: Facilities include restrooms with and without showers; a playground area; a summertime 40' x 110' swimming pool; a 10' x 30' wading pool for children; a game area with a sand volleyball pit; a horseshoe pit; a basketball goal; a large open area for baseball, soccer, football, and kite flying.There are developed campsites with water nearby with a table, a grill, individual site parking; campsites with water; campsites with water and electricity; a group trailer area (sites with water and electricity); large trailer sites with water and electricity; a one-mile nature trail; trailer dump stations; and screened shelters. Special rates are available; seasonal camping fees December through February. There are group recreation halls for day or overnight use (air-conditioned); group day-use areas (picnic tables under moderate shade. The swimming pool and concession are open Thursday - Sunday, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Pool hours are 11 AM - 7 PM. The Swimming pool is available for rental - inquire at the park headquarters. There is no fee for swimming with paid entry.

The park staff operates a Texas State Park Store where they sell ice, T-shirts, caps, wildlife posters, and other items.

Weekend Update

This evening I attended the last performance of the play "Twentieth Century" at the Abilene Community Theater.

The place was packed and the show was very funny. While some of you were sitting at home on your couch I was out having a great time.

It was a fun evening and it was a reminder that the Abilene Community Theater should not be forgotten when someone is looking for something to do.

Weekend Update

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. There is a lot to do, so check out the entire site - you don't want to miss anything. We promised that we would give updates about what we are doing this weekend. I am the first to post an update, but check later to see what the rest of the Abilene Action team has been up to.

My weekend activities officially began at 11:00pm Friday night. That is when the 96 hours of Depeche Mode started!

If you have no idea who that is, let me help you out:

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s; one of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, Depeche Mode began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era.

Now I have heard people complain that they are not happy with the radio stations in Abilene TX. They complain that they don't have a station that plays this or that. People! It is 2006 - you now can have over a hundred stations aviable to you 24 hours a day. You can have every kind of music imagineable, and it's commercial free! The two services are Sirius Satellite Radio (www.sirius.com ) and XM Satellite Radio(www.xmradio.com). I have both services and always have something great to listen to. Friday Night, Sirius Satelitte Radio's channel
22 ( FIRST WAVE ) started the 96 Hours of Depeche Mode. That is right, for 96 hours they will only play Depeche Mode - live concerts, album cuts, and special mixes. It has been great so far, and I am only into the first day! So, if you love music and live in Abilene and are not happy with the local channels, then check out XM and Sirius. You will not regret it!

Next on my agenda is the play "Twentieth Century" at the Abilene Community Theater tonight. I'll post a review and pictures after the show.

Stamford: 39.8 miles is not that far to drive for a chance to have all kinds of fun.

The History:
TEXAS COWBOY REUNION - The Texas Cowboy Reunion, founded in 1930 as a tribute to the Texas cowboy, is held each year for three days around July 4 in Stamford. It is a gathering of working cowhands, not professional rodeo cowboys, aimed at honoring their traditions. Held in conjunction with the rodeo are the Texas Old-Timers Reunion, the Texas Quarter Horse Show, and the John Selmon Memorial Art Show. In February 1930 a group of thirteen Stamford businessmen met to discuss establishing some type of local celebration to counteract the depression morale. Since Stamford was central to several large ranches, a rodeo seemed appropriate, and, in order to make it unique, the founders named it the Texas Cowboy Reunion and dedicated it to preserving the heritage of the typical West Texas cowboy. That first year was a success in every way. Ninety-eight cowboys participated in four events. Calf roping was the most popular, but was followed closely by wild-cow milking, steer riding, and bronc riding. A total of 12,000 persons attended the rodeo in three days. In the following years the event grew. By 1937 crowds totaling 70,000 attended, with people coming from all over the Southwest. To accommodate them, reunion officials provided permanent grandstands, new lighting, a small lake, a two-story pavilion, and a bandstand. Attendance dropped sharply with World War IIqv but rose to between 50,000 and 65,000 by 1955. In the years after that it dropped until it leveled off at 10,000 to 12,000.The Texas Cowboy Reunion has established its own style.

A visitor to Stamford for the rodeo is met by the yells of the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboy Band leading off the parade, invited to eat at a chuck wagon, and entertained by local cowboys trying to best some of the meanest rodeo stock around. If that is not enough, there is always an old-timer at the bunkhouse who is eager to describe his version of life on the Texas range; it is his heritage that the Texas Cowboy Reunion celebrates each year on its fifty-five acres of land just west of Stamford.

New Airline to Abilene

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air is placing a bet on Abilene. The low-cost carrier is expected to announce today the introduction of direct flights between Abilene Regional Airport and Las Vegas, an Allegiant spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

The airline flies 150-passenger jets from mid-sized cities to Las Vegas and Orlando, said Tyri Squyres, director of corporate communication. Abilene might get direct flights to Orlando if enough passengers fly to Las Vegas.
Abilene's service likely will begin with flights two days a week. The first fares available typically start at $69 for a one-way ticket, Squyres said.

However, it is James Deans' presence in the film, as a troubled local cowboy who dreams of being an oil barron, that gives the film its timeless quality. The Paramount's 75th Anniversary live performance series continues with this celebrated one-man show highlighting the life of legendary film star Groucho Marx. Frank Ferrante is an actor, director and producer described by the New York Times as "the greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marx's material." This hilarious two-act comedy is full of the one-liners, anecdotes and songs that made Marx one of the most memorable figures in Hollywood history. This is the perfect show for all ages! Tickets are reserved seating at $25, $20, $15 and $10 depending on location.
